In the 13-1400's before a ship set sail on it's maiden voyage, it was considered good luck to 'bloody the keel' by crushing slaves under the keel as it was set into the water for the first time. They would keep a few slaves onboard so that they could be sacraficed incase a storm arose while they were at sea. |
